Starting something new can feel exciting and a little overwhelming—especially when it comes to music. If you’re preparing for your first piano lesson in Fairfax VA, you might be wondering what the experience will be like, what to bring, and how to prepare. At Piano Inspired, we’ve guided countless students through this process, from young children just beginning to explore sound to adult students ready to return to their musical dreams. In this post, I’ll walk you through what to expect so you can feel comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy the joy of music.
Arriving for Your First Lesson
When you arrive at our music school here in Fairfax County, you’ll be welcomed into a warm, supportive space. Many of our new students come in a little nervous, but I promise that after just a few minutes, those feelings fade. We’ve designed the studio to be inviting, and our piano instructors will greet you with a smile and ask a few simple questions about your goals, interests, and any prior experience you may have.
If this is your first time taking lessons, there’s no need to worry. You don’t need to bring anything beyond yourself and perhaps a notebook. We’ll provide sheet music, pencils, and even guidance on hand position as you sit down at the piano.
Talking About Your Musical Goals
Every student comes to lessons with unique reasons for learning. Some students want to play classical music, others dream of joining a school band, and still others just want to pick out their favorite piano pieces at home. During your first lesson, your music teacher will ask about your musical goals and your musical experience.
This conversation helps us ensure your lessons are a good fit. We work with students of all ages, so no dream is too big or too small.

Who We Teach
One of the best parts of running this studio is working with such a wide range of skill levels:
- Young children: For little ones, lessons are playful and fun, often involving games and movement.
- School students: Older children can focus on repertoire, sight reading, and preparing for group classes or recitals.
- Adult students: We understand the unique challenges that come with being an adult learner and tailor lessons for flexibility and encouragement.
- Advanced students: If you’ve had significant training, we’ll match you with a professional musician on our staff who has the teaching experience and music degree to guide you forward.

Other Musical Opportunities
Although we specialize in piano, we also provide keyboard lessons, singing and voice lessons, and select woodwind lessons, including clarinet lessons, saxophone lessons, and flute lessons. Some students come to us while taking drum lessons, violin lessons, or even electric guitar or acoustic guitar lessons elsewhere. Having access to different musical instruments can make for well-rounded development.
In-Person and Online Lessons
We know life is busy, which is why many students choose online piano lessons. Virtual learning allows us to connect with students across the United States, from places as far as San Francisco, New Jersey, St. Louis, New York City, San Antonio, and even Puerto Rico. With online lessons, you can continue your studies with us no matter where life takes you.
If you’re local to Fairfax, or nearby neighborhoods like Burke, VA, and Oakton, VA, we offer in-person lessons at our Fairfax, VA, studio. For families in the Northern Virginia area like Falls Church or West Springfield who may not be able to travel regularly, our online lessons provide the same high-quality instruction in a more flexible format.
Payment and Scheduling
Lessons are scheduled weekly in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions, either in our Fairfax studio or online. Tuition runs on two periods: Fall–Spring (Sept–June) with a set schedule, and Summer (July–Aug) with flexible options. Payments are billed monthly in advance, and we accept cash, check, Zelle, credit card, or PayPal (fees apply for card/PayPal). Make-up lessons are available with 24 hours’ notice, but tuition is non-refundable. To discontinue lessons, one month’s written notice is required.
