Frequently Asked Questions

What will I learn?
  • Lessons are taught in a positive and encouraging environment with custom made teaching designed for every individual need and goal.
  • There are a wide range of options including different musical styles and activities to help learning.
  • We teach reading music, music theory, communicating ideas and stories through music, sight reading, ear-training, harmonization, composition, music software, tech use.
  • We have hands on activities and games for younger students.
What kind of piano do I need?
  • The best option is an acoustic piano that is tuned at least once a year. But if cost, room size and controllable volume are important factors, then a digital piano may be better for you.
  • Digital pianos can be excellent too, with a sound and touch similar to acoustic, but it will not be exactly the same. Wearing headphones or lowering volume, plus variable tones etc. make it a flexible option.
  • A digital piano must have the following features:
  • 88 keys, touch sensitive, weighted keys, sustain/damper pedal, bench of an appropriate height, entirely self-contained or on a keyboard stand (not a table or desk)
  • Located in an area of the home that promotes consistent practice
How much should I practice?
  • A regular time should be set aside each day for practice to become a daily habit and to consistently reinforce concepts and avoid cramming the day before a lesson.
  • Treat practicing like other homework and expect it to be done daily.
  • Students not prepared for lessons will reduce their value and enjoyment, learning less.
  • It is important to focus on the quality of practice as well as how long to practice.
  • Students should practice at least 5 days per week.
  • Recommended practice time by age is:
  • 5-7 years old: 10-15 minutes
  • 8-10 years old: 20-25 minutes
  • 11-14 years old: 30-40 minutes
  • 15 and older: 45-60 minutes
  • Weekly practice assignment goals will be set for the student and consistency is important. Encouragement and making time for practice in the student's schedule will sustain progress.
